As part of this #dwelloctoberstudio '90s builder grade transformation, we also updated the second floor of the home. The changes upstairs were mostly cosmetic and included new windows and doors, new white oak hardwood flooring, new trim with a clean, modern profile, and fresh white paint. It's amazing how something as simple as switching out door hardware can have such a dramatic impact on modernizing the look and feel of a home!

In the primary bedroom, we introduced color, pattern, and texture through the bedding. A gray upholstered bed served as the backdrop for floral print sheets, a chambray quilt, block print throw pillows, and a terracotta striped lumbar pillow. A blue and white striped area rug adds another layer of texture and warmth to the space. A white oak dresser and a nightstand with black steel hardware lends a modern touch.

Down the hall in the guest bedroom, a floral patterned fabric headboard and gold velvet throw pillows add color to an otherwise neutral room. A vintage pine cabinet serves as a nightstand and adds character to the space.

When designing the full bathroom, we opted for classic finishes that would stand the test of time. The gray vanity served as the jumping off point for this design. When vanity shopping, one of our favorite tips is to purchase a vanity base only, and then customize it with your desired sink and stone countertop, such as the neutral quartzite remnant used here. We also swapped out the standard hardware for more modern matte black handles and knobs. A pretty Victorian-style silver faucet with cross-shaped knobs balances out the more modern elements of this bathroom design.

The marble hexagon floor tiles and simple white subway tile on the shower walls coordinate with the color scheme of the vanity, while subtle pink accents in the bath mat and shower curtain add some playful color to the space.

The changes made to the bedrooms and bathrooms of this home prove that cosmetic updates can have a major impact on the feel of a home. We aimed to make selections that were classic, yet modern at the same time and breathe new life into this wonderful home.
