A #dwelloctoberstudio mid-century modern fixer-upper retreat fit for any guest

Seeing as the primary bathroom of our #dwelloctoberstudio mid-century modern fixer-upper project featured a more masculine black and white color scheme, we chose to create a feminine, earthy guest bathroom for a bit of contrast.

The design of this bathroom was inspired by a beautiful hand-glazed green brick tile full of texture and dimension. We made this tile the focal point of the bathroom, dedicating an entire wall and creating the perfect backdrop for a soaking tub and walk-in shower. The original bathroom included a tub/shower combo and a laundry chute with a built-in linen cabinet. We chose to remove the laundry chute and storage in order to accommodate both a free-standing tub and walk-in shower. As part of this layout change, we built a narrow ledge to serve as a shelf for toiletries. We stacked the tile in a vertical grid pattern from floor to ceiling to make a statement and add color.

For the bathroom floor, we chose a white marble hexagon tile inlaid with thin brass strips. The geometric layout and refined materials add contrast to the more organic green tiles without competing for attention. Minimalist brushed brass plumbing fixtures coordinate with the brass inlays of the floor tile and provide a layer of warmth to the design. A rainhead shower and wall-mounted tub filler add to the bathroom's spa-like atmosphere.

An oak wood vanity also provides color and texture to the space. The thick countertop gives this affordable vanity a luxurious look. A freeform black mirror and black marble globe sconces are a bit unexpected and provide a modern feel.

Next door to the guest bathroom is a generously sized guest bedroom. The furniture featured in this room was actually selected as part of a design refresh for the owner's previous home, yet the earthy terracotta and blue color scheme works for this house as well.

A navy blue linen bed is paired with ecru striped bedding and terracotta throw pillows. A dark wood and rattan nightstand provides texture and contrasts with the bright white walls, while an abstract landscape print coordinates with the colors of the bed and rug.
