Updating the #sisterhouse floor plan for modern life

Our decision to reconfigure the first floor layout of the #sisterhouse was motivated by the desire to create a more functional kitchen with an open concept living area. When we first saw the house, we absolutely loved the original dining room. Because the room was situated at the back of the house, every window looked out onto trees, creating a quiet, peaceful atmosphere. We thought that this beautiful space would be better utilized as a kitchen rather than a formal dining room reserved for special occasions.

Inspired by the home's Craftsman roots, we opted for neutral beige cabinets, but added a pop of color with a navy blue island. We decided to forgo upper cabinets along the back wall for a simple, clean look. A white herringbone tile backsplash and white quartz countertops brightened up the space.

We incorporated warm brass cabinet hardware and lighting over both the island and sink. A chrome bridge faucet added another layer of metal, while tying in with the stainless steel appliances. A white fireclay farmhouse sink felt appropriate for the age and style of the home.

We aimed to keep the space's original character by refinishing the existing hardwood floors with walnut stain. We also kept an original built in, which serves as the perfect spot for displaying cookbooks, bowls, and plants.

To create better flow, we opened up the wall between the kitchen and living room. This allowed more natural light to filter through to the back of the house, while still keeping the two spaces separately defined.

We converted the original kitchen space to a dining room that was the perfect size for a table and chairs, plus a small console table.

The dining room was adjacent to a beautiful entryway that was one of our favorite things about the house.

With a few minor structural changes, we were able to transform the first floor layout to create a more functional floor plan conducive to modern life, while maintaining the wonderful original character of this home.
