An efficient primary suite at a #dwelloctoberstudio mid-century modern fixer-upper

The primary suite at our #dwelloctoberstudio mid-century modern fixer-upper project offered a great layout—it was just in need of a major refresh.

The original bathroom was very efficient, so we kept the same overall footprint, but enlarged the shower and relocated the plumbing to another wall. This small change allowed for a spacious walk-in shower with room for a bench.

Large black hexagon tiles were used for the floor throughout the bathroom, while matte white kitkat tile was stacked in a vertical grid pattern on the shower walls. For a bit of drama, we used a large-format black and white porcelain tile with a bold pattern for the shower bench. Gold plumbing fixtures add a touch of glam to an otherwise minimalist shower.

We kept the color palette simple in this space, opting for classic black and white with warm wood and brass tones. A walnut slat wood vanity supplies the room with that mid-century modern feel. Black and brass pendant lights flank the vanity and allude to the home's mod roots, while a large black rectangular mirror provides a modern touch.

The changes in the adjoining primary bedroom were mostly cosmetic. We swapped out the busy floral wallpaper for clean white paint and whitewashed the original hardwood floors. When choosing furniture, we aimed to introduce interesting textures and materials. A linen and walnut platform bed was paired with a bouclé throw pillow and hunter green velvet quilt. The green is reflected in the vintage stone bedside tables, as well as the artwork in the room.

A brown vegan leather chair and earthy landscape print combine to create a quiet corner perfect for reading and relaxing. Natural sunlight streams in through the windows and pairs with the white walls and light wood floors to provide a bright, airy feeling.
